NFL Lowdown: Week 3

Get to talk about some of my favorite topics this week, like football player cereals, and I get to draw silly Buccaneers diagrams.

So in the Steelers organization, if Todd Haley is Gollum, and Mike Tomlin is Frodo, who is Samwise?

-I'm not Billy Bad-Ass.

by Mr Shush :: Fri, 09/21/2012 - 9:18am

Kevin Colbert?

by drobviousso :: Fri, 09/21/2012 - 10:45am

Charlie Batch.

Not to pick nits or anything, but it's Bilbo who steals the ring.

by Karl Cuba :: Fri, 09/21/2012 - 11:26am

Which would mean that Dick Lebeau is Gandalf, which works quite well.

I don't know how he came up with that Hobbitesque bit but I'm glad he did.

by justanothersteve :: Fri, 09/21/2012 - 6:57pm

Actually, Bilbo found the ring. It's Gollum's viewpoint that the Bagginses stole it.

Kid A is better than The Bends.

by jimbohead :: Fri, 09/21/2012 - 10:29am

The bends was very easy for people to listen to without having their whole world-view blown. Kid-A.... not so much. What less forgivable to me is rating HTTT higher than Kid-A/Amnesiac or In Rainbows. Seriously Tanier. Common!

Great column, btw. I laughed so hard at the coldplay line that I quite literally snorted.

I know some people, dedicated Radiohead fans, who consider Hail to the Thief the best Radiohead album. I'm of the age where OK Computer holds that title, but I understand where younger listeners are coming from. Someone who started at In Rainbows might not find pre Kid A albums impressive, but might still not be ready for the Kid A/Amnesiac challenge.

Furthermore, if viewed from a commercial standpoint, the three Tanier names are likely the band's most commercially successful albums (I don't feel like looking up the numbers). If we consider this comparable to Super Bowl wins, then Kid A is like an 18-0 season with a Super Bowl loss: conceptually impressive, but not the best seller.

Though if we carry that analogy over to Coldplay, the Ravens might be happy with the rings.

HTTT came out when I was in high school, and I devoured the crap out of that thing. But then, I realized that there was more depth, interest, and creativity in OK Computer. And Kid-A/Amnesiac still blows my mind-hole whenever I listen to it.

I'm having trouble finding numbers, but it looks like In Rainbows outsold HTTT pretty dramatically; their pre-release of IR online netted more money than HTTT earned in all formats.

by InTheBoilerRoom :: Fri, 09/21/2012 - 12:49pm

Agreed, I was surprised by that as well. For my listening tastes, I regard In Rainbows as second only to OK Computer overall. But I also favor Amnesiac to Kid A and don't hate TKoL (although I prefer the performance of TKoL Live from The Basement to the original studio recording), so my tastes differ than many others'.

And the Coldplay line was a masterpiece. I seem to remember a list of musical artists referred to as some derivative of Radiohead, such as "Radiohead lite" (Coldplay) and "Radiohead for your parents" (David Gray). Wish I could find the rest of the list.

by jimbohead :: Fri, 09/21/2012 - 5:41pm

I remember reading Allmusic.com's review of Muse's Origin of Symmetry (which came out shortly after Kid-A, iirc), and saying something to the effect of, "hey, if you want to be Radiohead at a time when not even Radiohead wants to be Radiohead, why not take it over the top?"

by Raiderjoe :: Fri, 09/21/2012 - 12:25pm

Like Kid A moist.

Favriire song Idiotechque.

Track 1 Greta too

by Aaron Brooks Go... :: Fri, 09/21/2012 - 1:41pm

I like Kid A, too, but it doesn't make me moist.

I think this whole argument, while fun, misses the point. Which is that Raiderjoe is a Radiohead fan. Are you Radioheadjoe on some other site?

by James-London :: Fri, 09/21/2012 - 6:03pm

Bravo. That's awesome.

Phil Simms is a Cretin.

by Raiderjoe :: Sat, 09/22/2012 - 12:08pm

Do not goon radio sites butif did would use name Radioheadjoe
.that is good name

Will make week 3 picks today. Could not get around to it last noght

by Nathan :: Fri, 09/21/2012 - 6:16pm

God Bless RJ, Kid A is indeed the best record, Idioteque is the best song on the record, and Everything in Its Right Place is the 2nd best song on the record.

You have to keep in mind all everyone on the planet wanted when Kid A came out was OK Computer 2 and then Radiohead came in totally out of left field and said 'no everyone, what you really want is this crazy shit' and you listened to it and were like 'holy fuck, I did really want this crazy shit.'

Don't sleep on Amnesiac too, also a great record.

"Yer's Revenge"

Well played, Tanier. Well played. /slowclap

by jklps :: Fri, 09/21/2012 - 11:07am

I respectfully disagree with the Bengals-Redskins preview.

I realize the Redskins defense isn't great, but the Bengals get lit up constantly.

And for what it's worth, it's the Redskins home opener (finally). Weeks 1 and 2 were on the road.

The only other team this year with it's home opener this late...the Dallas Cowboys. Which two teams got cap penalized in the offseason? Hmmm....

by Karl Cuba :: Fri, 09/21/2012 - 11:13am

Chris Johnson runs so fast that he approaches the limits of relativity, bending space-time in such a manner that it constricts around him and so he is unable to avoid running straight into the defensive linemen.

by Guido Merkens :: Fri, 09/21/2012 - 11:17am

If that is true, then time should slow down from Chris Johnson's perspective. This means that he will age much slower and that Titans fans will be stuck watching exciting 1-yard runs for the next 30 years.

by JasonK :: Fri, 09/21/2012 - 4:23pm

I get the comedy impact of the Bucs having 16 guys rushing the kneeldown, but why is the back behind Eli wearing Lawrence Taylor's number?

by Mr Shush :: Sun, 09/23/2012 - 8:45am

I'd go a bit easy on that Raiders-Steelers prediction . . .

by Insancipitory :: Sun, 09/23/2012 - 8:03pm

Janakowski sweeps the leg indeed. Still time for him to be wrong about my Seahawks though.

by Raiderjoe :: Sun, 09/23/2012 - 9:05pm

Really bummed about Eags pick because thought Carfs were good team anyway. Expected SF vs Minn game to be close so guess not surprised vikes won
