MMQB: Inside the Revis Trade

This week, Mr. King takes a comprehensive look inside the Darrelle Revis trade, discusses some of the inner workings at SI (especially looking at his new upcoming site), and thinks the early case against Browns owner Jimmy Haslam is "ominous."

So basically I was right, trading Revis now was what Johnson wanted to do, not necessarily what Idzik wanted to do. So they open with Tampa in New York; you think last year was a circus, wait until you see that blowout.

I don't see anything in the article about Johnson forcing Idzik's hand. The Jets did the right thing - I don't see how you argue otherwise. The Ravens just won the Super Bowl without Darrelle Revis, and the 49ers lost to them without Darrelle Revis. The best CB in the league has never carried a team to a championship - which is why you don't want a CB as the highest paid guy on your team. Much less highest paid guy in the league (on defense).

The Jets are a mess, and Revis isn't going to get them out of it. The Jets need talent, and lots of it. A cornerback can cover one playmaker at a time - unlike a J.J. Watt, who can make plays every down, pass or run. If you think Revis is going to put Tampa over the top, you're delusional. They signed Revis to sell tickets.

It was actually one of the sanest things the Jets have done in some time. The only part I don't really get is why Rex was retained if they're going to admit they're in rebuilding mode, but apparently they think that he can build them back up...or that they can blame it all on him if they tank too badly this season.

Jon Frum-- I was referring to this quote in the Peter King article: "Another source said Jets GM John Idzik knew coach Rex Ryan didn't want to trade Revis, and was hoping against hope owner Woody Johnson would reconsider his stance about paying Revis a rich contract to keep him in New York." According to Peter King's source, Idzik was hoping to keep Revis.
I think drafting Wilkerson and Coples were saner ideas. My problem isn't that they traded Revis, it's that they did not get proper compensation for him. They sold low by trading now, not later this offseason when he can show his progress. The only thing that trading him now gained was a pick in the 2013 draft, instead of one in the 2014 draft, which has more impact players. To be honest, the Jets would be better off the less help they get this year as opposed to next.

Deon Sanders won the Super Bowl with the 49ers and the Dallas Cowboys. He wasn't the only great player on those teams, but he was a big reason they got super bowl rings those years.
I think I agree with Barnwell and Peter King about this; you build around great players. Trading them rarely works out for a team.

Tampa Bay to win the Super Bowl in the next 2 years!

How does PK reference Steinbrenner's display of a projected 1985 starting lineup with Elway in right, and neglect to mention the anecdote in Accorsi's book? The one where Ernie saw the Yankees scouting report on Elway, that they projected him to top out as a AA player, so knew that the Colts had the upper hand in negotiations. That Ernie had a phone conversation with Elway and an agreement to finalize a contract in a few weeks, after the controversy settled down, until Irsay traded Elway out from under him.

Why offer Steinbrenner's story without the counterbalance?

Exactly, @JimZipCode. A mythology has developed that Elway was this can't miss prospect. That wasn't the case at all. He had a nice year in 82 with Oneonta, but decent stats in a short season A league don't automatically project to big league stardom.

Blame the documentary, not PK. He's just recapping what he saw, and he probably remembers less detail from that mess than you do.

And perhaps without the excruciating agony, too. ;-)

No doubt you're handling it better this off-season.
