Rookie Mistakes

I watched hundreds of pass attempts by Geno Smith, EJ Manuel, and Mike Glennon so you did not have to! Sober analysis with a few silly asides of three rookies who remind us that it's not 2012 anymore.

I expected a big picture of Jon Bostic when I clicked this link.

Bostic was late recognising the camera and then over-ran the photo opportunity.

So Glennon has potential if his coaching staff modifies their scheme to fit their player and gives him good instruction to correct his flaws... He's doomed.

Mike mentions that the Buccaneers like to run on 1st and 2nd down, making Glennon have to perform on 3rd down. As an aside, I've never understood why coaches who have inexperienced or rookie QB's seem to think that running on 1st and 2nd down is a good thing to do. "Well, it gets them into 3rd and manageable" is often what you hear. Yes, let's call plays that guarantee that your rookie QB not used to reading blitzes is going to end up in a 3rd and 5 or 3rd and 6 obvious passing situation.

How about you call some playaction on 1st down, or on an "obvious running down" like 2nd and 10 call a pass and have some guys run wheel routes or hooks or comebacks, and pick up 7 or 8 yards? Making your passing plays predictable is the last thing you want to do to make life easier on your rookie...

Nice Jaws reference, and a belated nod to the Dylan
reference in the Wash-KC game discussion.

Re: Geno - No mention of this, but given his situation,
could he get Carred in another season or so?

I don't know if I would compare Geno and Carr's situations. A large percentage of Geno's sack are because he holds the ball too long. While that may be because no one is open, that's not the same as the total assault Carr had to deal with at Houston. Geno might end up with the same situation as Jimmy Clausen if the Jets draft a quarterback next year.

I'm not sold on Manuel in Marrone's system yet, but I agree that he definitely can handle the pre-snap part of it better than any of the other rookies, so I hold out hope. McNabb is actually who he reminds me of, and that wouldn't be a bad thing.

When your big hope for your QB is that he turns into Joe Flacco you might want to start scouting some college games.
