Tanier's NFL Game Riffs: Week 16

Down the stretch I come, thinking about how the Lions are turning into the Cowboys, the Chiefs into the Eagles, the Eagles into the old Eagles, and the Cowboys and Redskins into high satire.

I have to say that watching a pug in the mud sounds pretty adorable.

I have long wondered what the man has to do to get a shot at being the starting running back. Is there that much reason to think he is worse than Rashad Jennings? Tanier seems to like him.

I hate to ruin your doom and gloom storyline, but the Bears game is meaningless to the Eagles if Dallas beats Washington. Unless Eagles win this week and Dallas loses this week, next weeks game will decide the division. Since the Bears game is a night game, we'll even know the Dallas/Washington outcome before kickoff.

I wouldn't consider it meaningless. If they lose to Chicago, they can only make the playoffs as the 4th seed, whereas they're guaranteed the 3rd seed if they win out, and will avoid Seattle until the conference championship. The 3rd seed is also likely to net them a home game against New Orleans, which is far more preferable than San Francisco.

I love Tanier, but he's been unable to figure out this year's Bears all season.

The latest evidence? This line: "This is a very different Eagles team -- and a slightly different Bears team -- than we are used to" (emphasis mine).

This Bears team may be mediocre-to-good on the whole (+12.4% overall DVOA), just like always, but it's a very, very different team that previous years. Just look at the DVOA splits.

Offense: +16.1% (4th)
Defense: +5.5% (22nd)
Special teams: +1.8% (12th)

Are we really used to a good offense, bad defense, OK special teams Bears? I've seen almost every play of this team for the last decade, and I'm still not.

EDIT: The "Game Riffs" article is still a great read; this is most definitely the Tanier we're used to.

I thought I was a master of the ESPN playoff machine and finding really, really silly situations. I bow in awe of Tanier's "Cardinals Nightmare."
