Week 15 Injury Aftermath

compiled by Andrew Potter

49ers Receiver Michael Crabtree -- Hand

Multiple sources report that Michael Crabtree had X-ray images taken on his left hand following Sunday's game, though none have confirmed a diagnosis. Any substantial injury to Crabtree, only recently returned from an Achilles injury, would be a significant blow to the 49ers pass offense.

Jaguars Receiver Cecil Shorts -- Groin

It's not a new injury, but reports out of Jacksonville indicate that the groin injury afflicting leading receiver Cecil Shorts is not healing as well as the team hoped, and he is now likely to inactive for the rest of the season. If those reports prove accurate, Shorts would end the season with 777 receiving yards, three touchdowns, -47 DYAR, and -17.5% DVOA. Backup guard Mike Brewster has a fractured left ankle and will miss the last two games. Linebacker Russell Allen left Sunday's game with concussion symptoms and enters the league protocol.

Bengals Tight End Jermaine Gresham -- Hip
Bengals Punter Kevin Huber -- Jaw (IR)

On offense, tight end Jermaine Gresham left Sunday's game with an unspecified hip injury, and is expected to have a MRI scan on the injury today. Gresham's -33 DYAR ranks 42nd, and his -16.1% DVOA ranks 40th. Tyler Eifert would take Gresham's place in the lineup if the latter misses time. On special teams, vicious hit on Kevin Huber during Antonio Brown's touchdown return broke the Bengals punter's jaw, which may necessitate surgery and will definitely end his season. Finally, on defense, linebacker James Harrison left the game with concussion symptoms and enters the league protocol.

Browns Cornerback Joe Haden -- Hip

Joe Haden left Sunday's game with a hip pointer, a collision injury to the iliac crest (the upper, outermost part of the butterfly shape) of the pelvis. Though not generally considered a serious injury, it is extremely painful and restrictive, and usually requires around two weeks of rest to heal properly. Haden's loss would be a significant blow to a Cleveland defense which ranked third against number one receivers (-25.3% DVOA) entering Week 15.

Packers Tight End Brandon Bostick -- Foot
Packers Defensive End Johnny Jolly -- Shoulder

Brandon Bostick was carted off during Sunday's win over the Cowboys with an undisclosed foot injury. He is expected to have a MRI scan performed on the foot today. Defensive end Johnny Jolly left with a shoulder injury, having only recently recovered from a groin injury. No news is yet public on the severity of the new injury.

Cowboys Linebacker Justin Durant -- Hamstring
Cowboys Linebacker Ernie Sims -- Hip

Justin Durant and backup Ernie Sims both left Sunday's game with injuries. Durant became the latest Cowboys starter to succumb to a hamstring injury, whereas Sims left for X-rays on a hip injury. No update is yet available on either.

Falcons Linebacker Sean Weatherspoon -- Knee

Sean Weatherspoon left Sunday's game with a knee injury -- potentially an aggravation of the injury which limited him in practice prior to Week 14. No update is yet available on the injury's severity.

In addition to the players mentioned above, Cardinals receiver Larry Fitzgerald, Giants receiver Victor Cruz, and Patriots offensive tackle Nate Solder left their respective games with concussion symptoms and enter the league protocol.

Chris Mortensen is now reporting that not only was Huber's jaw broken, he also sustained a cracked vertebra in his neck.

NE WR Joyce Boyce was reported to be "limping heavily" in the locker room after the game. He did not play the final three series.

Wow. So far, significant Patriots skill players have missed 33 games due to injury, not counting partial games lost when they were injured (I'm counting "significant" as the top 4 WR's, top 4 RB's, and top 2 TE's). With Gronk on IR, that number will go up at least two more, and probably higher given Dobson and Thompkins are currently hurt. And now Boyce is possibly out, too. That would make the entire Pats' healthy receiving corps: Edelman, Amendola, and Austin Collie. Yikes.

I wonder if 33 out of 140 possible skill-player-games is typical for an injury ravaged team through 14 games, or if the Pats have been hit especially hard...

It's been a brutal year for a lot of teams. I know the Bears and Packers were both hit hard. The Steelers had like 4 guys on IR after week 1.

33/140 is probably not that unusual when you consider guys going on IR early in the season. Taking the Colts as an example simply because I've recently been looking at their data, Dwayne Allen and Vick Ballard alone account for 26 games missed so far, then Reggie Wayne adds another six. None of those three will play another game this year, so that will be 38/160 just from three players.

I'll maybe see if I can throw together some league-wide data when I have some free time.

49ers FB Bruce Miller suffered a broken scapula against the Buccaneers. Possible season-ender for him.

Shoulder blade. Ouch. I'll be amazed if he plays again this season. That's usually 2-4 weeks of immobilization before he can even use the arm again -- I say usually, it's apparently a rare (less than 1% of fractures) injury.

Colts ILB Pat Angerer placed on IR.
