Bills Trade for Mike Williams

One sixth-rounder was all it took to secure the services of Mike Williams, as Lovie Smith continues to rebuild his offense around the old Chicago game plan.

I know the dude had some off-field issues, but this is a total surprise.

Not too much risk for the Bills - you're not going to draft someone with this much upside in the 6th unless you get REALLY lucky, and his contract is manageable.

I guess we know who's taking Mike Evans in the draft.

The risk is Williams has gone basically batsh*t crazy over the course of the last year. He's being sued because he caused a fire in his apartment, was cited for essentially living in a house that was nothing more than a giant, endless party, and he just got stabbed in the leg by his own brother. Add to that he's coming off an ACL injury, and you're talking about a guy who's potentially a giant distraction.

The weird part is his coach in Buffalo is going to be the guy who was his coach at Syracuse, and Williams' tenure in Syracuse ended with him storming off the team mid-season. Mike Williams was an utter steal as a 4th-round pick a few years back, but he's just gone totally off the rails since he had the knee injury. I really don't get Buffalo, of all teams, trading for him, just based on the history Williams and Marone have.

I think they feel like him coming home might well help settle him down. Let's be real - there's a lot less trouble to get into in Buffalo than in Tampa.

For a 6th round pick, though, he's probably worth a flier.

Yeah, I get that, but there's a lot less trouble in all sorts of cities where your new coach is the old coach who threw you off the team/pissed you off so much you walked off the team.

I'm a really big Mike Williams fan but have no problem with the team dumping him; he has gone utterly off-the-rails this past year, and there is no surprise with him going out the door. I just am utterly confused with the re-pairing with Marrone. It just seems like making sure the Titanic is really steering directly at the big iceberg; it's heading directly towards disaster.

Well it is Buffalo...

That said, Marrone is making all the right noises, so we'll see. I prefer this to signing Kenny Britt. ;)

Definitely worth the flyer. Most if not all of the trouble he got into happened after he was placed on IR. Basically, a young millionaire who likes to party suddenly found himself with a bunch of free time on his hands. I think he's a very good receiver, particularly adept at touching his toes down in bounds on jump balls along the sidelines, and I hate that we let him go.

It's obvious that Williams wasn't a Lovie type of player, so it is no surprise that he is gone. The Bills have a need at receiver and a 6th round pick is basically nothing. If Williams turns out to rehab well, then they have a talented player for (almost) free. If not, he's a camp cut and the 6th rounder probably would have been too.

I'm a little surprised given the Bills just drafted a couple of WRs last year in Goodwin and Woods. I thought they both looked to have promise. Add Stevie Johnson and Mike Williams and your party is starting to get a little crowded. Although 6th round isn't paying too much if Williams ends up being your WR4.

As Adam Schefter mentioned yesterday on twitter, Mike Williams is now the 7th player named Williams on the Bills roster. So clearly they're looking to exploit that somehow.

They'll all be wearing the same number, as well, this year. Formation confusion!
