Conference Championship Injury Aftermath

compiled by Andrew Potter

49ers Linebacker NaVorro Bowman

NaVorro Bowman suffered a torn ACL late in Sunday's game as Seahawks receiver Jermaine Kearse landed on the outside of his leg, causing his knee to collapse inward. The injury places in doubt his status for the opening week of next season, a devastating blow for the key member of what is widely considered the best linebacker group in the NFL. A MRI scan is expected to assess the severity of the tear, and any further damage to the player's knee. Bowman finished 2013 with 31 total Defeats and a Stop Rate of 62%.

Guard Mike Iupati also left Sunday's game with a significant injury: his broken ankle, however, is expected to be fully healed in time for the 2014 season.

Broncos Running Back Knowshon Moreno

Knowshon Moreno left Sunday's game with an unspecified chest injury, but is expected to be fully healthy in time for the Super Bowl. Likewise Tony Carter, who left Sunday's game with concussion symptoms, is expected to be ready to play.

Seahawks Receiver Doug Baldwin

Doug Baldwin suffered a hip injury which temporarily forced him to leave Sunday's game, and despite eventually returning he reportedly called the injury "significant" in a post-game interview. No details are yet public on the exact nature of the injury, but given the already depleted condition of Seattle's receiver corps any injury of significance is a concern ahead of the Super Bowl.

ESPN is now reporting the Bowman also has a torn MCL, but only the ACL will need surgery. To be honest, after watching it, I'm surprised there were not more torn ligaments and/or broken bones

From what I understand, there was no chance of his ACL being torn and his MCL not, given the way the knee buckled. I was certain, from watching, that his MCL was also torn; the only reason I didn't include that in the article is that it wasn't being officially reported as such at the time.

That type of injury, caused by weight rather than a forcible impact, doesn't generally cause both ligament and bone damage. Pressure is placed on the leg as a whole, and when either bone or ligament gives way the pressure is released, usually sparing the other.

Given the dismal start to RG3's season this year, I would strongly advise the 49ers not to rush Bowman back.

It was bad enough to just BARELY lose that game on the road; though it felt great to not feel like the Niners were bullied by the Seahawks. That aside, what a nasty injury. I hope Bowman has a VERY successful rehab & surgery. Not only is he a stud LB, but he seems like one of the "good guys" in pro sports.

When you emphasise a "VERY" successful rehab, are you implying that he should ask the Seahawk DBs about what PEDs to use? Or possibly Ray-Ray?

I'm sure the Seahawks are quite familiar with banned substances, but I would hope Bowman would stay far away from any banned substance. That aside, when I say "VERY" successful rehab I am hoping for a post-ACL Andrian Peterson versus a post-ACL Terrel Davis.

Iupati's injury has been updated to be a broken fibula

I'm curious about Mr. "I got hit by a 185 lb receiver and couldn't play the rest of the friggin' AFC Championship (again)."
What was Talib's actual injury?

by Andrew Potter :: Tue, 01/21/2014 - 10:40am

He reportedly injured a rib in his knee, aggravating his hip.

(In other words, the Patriots aren't saying and your guess is as good as anybody else's.)
