Mandatory Monday: Top Receivers

Top receiver corps, to be specific, and I consider tight ends and running backs who can catch as part of the corps.

"There are few teams capable of stopping the Detroit Lions. One of them, of course, is the Detroit Lions."

Never have I heard a more accurate and concise summary of the last three seasons of the Jim Schwartz era.

"The Panthers host the Seahawks on Oct. 26. Their over/under for receiving yards should be around 75"

If it was week 2 or even 4, I would agree, but by week 8, I expect them to be a LITTLE better than that. If they get 100 yards passing, but win the game 13-10, then I will take it.

Besides - this is 'Murica! A bunch of ragtag nobodies thrown together against the defending Champs with an injured leader calling the shots? It writes itself...

You sound like a lot of 1980's Bears fans.

Am I wrong to be worried about the running game as well? Williams and Stewart don't look like the players they used to be, and the line is troubling. It just looks like this offense is going to be almost entirely Cam, with a little help from Tolbert, Olsen, and hopefully Benjamin.

by panthersnbraves :: Tue, 06/24/2014 - 2:47pm

I'm not sure WHERE the offense will come from, but they managed to make it all the way to a play-off bye last year, so why not?

Pntares could make playoffs. Good defense, offensive line fine, RBs corpse good, hideouts seem weak but J. Cotchery pro's pro, k Benjamin could turn out A-ok and tight end pretty good.
Have not made picks yet, but x an see myself picking tema to go 9-7 or so

Rough division, though. The Saints will continue to score about 700 points a game until Drew Brees finally slows down, the Falcons should return to at least decency, and Tampa (*crosses fingers*) appears significantly improved this offseason. In the NFC East they'd have a shot at the division, but the NFC South is looking pretty brutal this year.

I'd also say the offensive line is a long ways from fine, it got pretty gutted this offseason. Throw in Kelvin Benjamin just screaming "Stephen Hill 2.0" in terms of being the big, physical one-year college wonder guy, and there are questions for every single person on that offense who isn't named "Cam" or "Greg Olsen".

What is this Murica stuff I see all over the place Now? My guess is some douche said it tv shwo or movie. What a dopey word to copycat.

Somet thing cooler to say woudl ve America but what do I knwo

It's from the movie "Team America - World Police", from the guys who created South Park. Check it out, I think you'll like it.

by Shattenjager :: Mon, 06/23/2014 - 2:54pm

I think that means Raiderjoe had it exactly right in calling it "dopey" and saying that "some douche" said it.

by Pied :: Tue, 06/24/2014 - 3:08am

I'm pretty sure it started when GWB pronounced it that way all the time.

by Raiderjoe :: Tue, 06/24/2014 - 7:07am

So it was a douche who started it., the 2012 chiefs of presidentss

by MilkmanDanimal :: Mon, 06/23/2014 - 11:07am

We are all way too busy in Tampa being optimistic about our all-offense draft class to face the reality that the WR corps is so thin Chris Owusu has a realistic shot to win the #3 WR position.

I thought Tate was a pedestrian receiver. Now he's with Detroit so it suddenly makes him part of a great 1-2 punch that vaults their WR corps to third on the list? If they traded Russell Wilson to Detroit would he become an elite QB instead of a game manager?

by JoeyHarringtonsPiano :: Mon, 06/23/2014 - 2:52pm

I don't think anyone around here (including Tanier when he was a writer here) ever called Tate "pedestrian" or Wilson a "game manager". You might have this site confused with CBSsports.com.

by Raiderjoe :: Mon, 06/23/2014 - 12:27pm

G. Tate on Loins should be more effective player than g. Tate on Seahawks., bet tree r players around him, should almost never see dublue coverage now

by uosdwiS :: Tue, 06/24/2014 - 12:06am

To be clear, Calvin Johnson and Any Other WR is essentially the best 1-2 punch in the league. I've never much cared for Tate as a player (unpleasant memories of the you-know-what against GB a few years ago), but his ability as a midrange receiver should be an upgrade on what passed for Any Other WR on the Lions last year. As Mike said, drafting Ebron is a big part of it too, if only to stop the Lions from throwing over 100 passes at the Pettigrew/Scheffler disaster ever again.

by ChrisS :: Tue, 06/24/2014 - 1:53pm

It is not just the WR's it is also RB's. Last year in RB Receiving DYAR Joique Bell was number 2 and R. Bush was 13th.

"Holmes was ...always an ordinary-at-best receiver".

I disagree. In 2010, after serving a four-game suspension, he was downright electric for the Jets in the remaining 12 games and playoffs, and was a big reason for their success that year. Unfortunately, Mike Tannenbaum gave him a huge contract, and Rex named him offensive team captain in 2011, and it was downhill from there. A real waste of talent.

Maybe the Patriots will sign him.

by Raiderjoe :: Mon, 06/23/2014 - 5:12pm

S. Holmes wa s goo d wi t j Steelers one year abd was revelation for Jets 2010. Sucked for Jets. 2011-2013

by duh :: Tue, 06/24/2014 - 3:53pm

Hard not to see the Bears as the best. Marshall, Jeffery, and Forte are quite the combo. Maybe no clear #1 but a #1.5, #1.5 and #1.5. Y'all can yell at me now :-)

by panthersnbraves :: Wed, 06/25/2014 - 10:32am

Better than #3, #3, #3, #4...

by morganja :: Wed, 06/25/2014 - 2:26pm

I fear the Panthers WR core is vastly over-rated in this article.
