ESPN: Nebraska's Inconsistent Offense

Nebraska faces a big obstacle this weekend against Texas A&M, and Brian Fremeau digs into his drive data to identify a few areas of concern for the Cornhuskers. It has been feast or famine all year for Nebraska, one of only two top-25 OFEI units to rank below average in avoiding three-and-outs. If a rejuvenated Taylor Martinez can take advantage of Texas A&M's propensity of surrendering methodical drives, Nebraska can continue its quest for a Big 12 championship and BCS bowl bid.

How much of Nebraska's inconsistency is just "they either break a big run or they don't" based on your data? (As opposed to teams who move the ball well consistently but shoot themselves in the foot with turnovers)

And, couldn't they lose 52-0 to A&M and still win the North's spot in the finals by beating Colorado as big favorites at home next week (they have the tie-breaker over Missouri with the head-to-head win, don't they?)? Or, to use the subhead...if a rejunevated Taylor Martinez CAN'T take advantage...aren't they still in the same shape they were in anyway in terms of their quest for the Big 12 title and a BCS bowl bid?

Wasn't tonight's game another example of the big play theme. Martinez got stepped on early...taking away the potential for him to break a long run...and the team managed just 2 field goals, 4.7 YPP, and 33% on third downs...against a defense that allowed 5.6 YPP and 57% on third downs to Baylor last week?

Not sure if "inconsistency" is the right word. They either break big plays or they don't against a certain threshold caliber of defense and up.

Rumors and rumblings that Martinez has quit the team. Will be interesting to see how this plays out. Reportedly he was texting his father in the locker room while getting taped up after the injury. Coach Pelini chewing him out related to that. Maybe you can read lips on the clip with this link. Haven't seen anything at ESPN yet.
