ESPN: Ohio State's Missed Opportunity

Ohio State can't participate in the 2012 postseason due to NCAA sanctions, but how might the Buckeyes have figured into the BCS championship race this year if they were eligible? They'd likely sit on the outside looking in at this point, and a closer look at their statistical profile indicates the reasons why. The 10-0 Buckeyes have trouble giving up big plays on defense and generating first downs on offense compared with the big four contenders, and Ohio State's special teams and field position success is nowhere near Meyer's teams at Florida. Is it really a missed opportunity this season, or are they simply setting the stage to take a more important step forward next year?

Look, as a Buckeye fan, I'm really excited with how well Meyer's turning things around. But let's not get carried away. A National Championship win wasn't going to happen this year, eligible or not. This is a team that gave up 49 points to Indiana.

Not having read the article for pay-wall reasons, I'll just state that "missed opportunity" can mean more than just the national championship. Like the Rose Bowl and its associated 8-figure payout. So yes, this is a missed opportunity.

The conference takes the Bowl payouts and each school gets a share. So they'll get the same share of the Rose Bowl payout they would have gotten if they played in it.

Of course the Big Ten will miss out on some small Bowl's payout, as everyone moves up a slot.

So they missed out on making more money for the big 10 and the school,SO WHAT. This team proved that even if they,so called werent going anywhere.(lol)That the true meaning of real college sports is over coming adverserty no mater whos fault it is or whos to blame. The final goal is to win as a team. It takes a little thing like caracter and pride in yourselves to keep winning even if your not going anywher.(lol) So now we will let the big money voters decide who should be champs or we can see who the real champs are that are going nowhere.(What these youg men are getting is far more valuable than a dollar bill will ever be worth, thanks Coach Meyer.....
