ESPN: Early 2016 AFC Projections

Well, here we go. It's time to take off the wrapping and unveil our first run of 2016 NFL projections. This ESPN Insider article goes in-depth into the projections which were also featured last week in Todd McShay's "way too early" 2017 mock draft. I explain why Denver is likely to significantly decline, why the AFC North could put three teams in the playoffs again, and why the Colts may not be the obvious pick in the AFC South despite Andrew Luck's return. NFC projections will run on Thursday. There's some video too.

QBASE 2016 (ESPN Insider Version)

This year's Football Outsiders QB projections absolutely love California's Jared Goff, who now ranks among the top 10 QB prospects of the past two decades according to QBASE. It is a lot less excited about Carson Wentz, but that comes with a bit of a caveat: we had to try to incorporate FCS prospects into the system in order to project Wentz, and the same method would have underrated FCS prospect Joe Flacco. We'll write more about the Wentz and FCS issue in an expanded FO version of QBASE to run next week.

SackSEER 2016 (ESPN Insider version)

Get a sneak peak at the top edge-rusher prospects according to our SackSEER system. Joey Bosa and Leonard Floyd are tied at the top, though Bosa is more of a sure thing. BYU's Bronson Kaufusi is an interesting sleeper. A longer version of SackSEER will appear on Football Outsiders next week.

ESPN: Who Won Trades Based on Cap Space?

The analysis of trades based on the value of draft picks and cap space appears on ESPN Insider this year. This article looks at four big recent NFL trades. Given the amount of cap space they gave up, the Maxwell/Alonso trade will only work for the Eagles if Byron Maxwell can become a Pro Bowl cornerback. Also, the Chandler Jones trade works out well for both sides, but even better for Arizona if they allow Jones to leave after one season and get a (likely very high) compensatory pick.

Playmaker Score 2016 (ESPN Insider version)

Here are Nathan Forster's Playmaker Score projections for the top WR prospects of 2016. Playmaker Score loves Corey Coleman of Baylor and is surprisingly lukewarm on the consensus No. 1 prospect, Laquon Treadwell of Ole Miss. Pharoh Cooper is our big mid-round sleeper. There will be an expanded piece with all the Playmaker Scores for 2016 (both "rating" and "projection") on FO next week, and then the same with Nathan's SackSEER projections for edge rushers: ESPN Insider next week and FO the week after.

ESPN: Washington Should Wait on Cousins Deal

Over at ESPN Insider, Sterling Xie looks at other quarterbacks who have had the kind of fourth-year improvement that Kirk Cousins showed this season. The problem? Those players are all over the map as far as whether they regressed or had good careers, so Washington needs to wait on giving Cousins a long-term deal until they can figure out if he is Aaron Brooks or Brett Favre.

ESPN: Speed Score 2016

Keith Marshall of Georgia sets a record at 126.9, while Derrick Henry and Ezekiel Elliott also come out remarkably high. But more importantly, this whole running back class does well in Speed Score, with only two running backs under 95.
