ESPN: Don't Break Up the Giants

This week's ESPN feature looks at the New York Giants. The talent seems to be there, but the Giants had two big problems this year. One was health, as the Giants will come close to the record for defensive AGL. The other is yet another second-half collapse, which ended up just like all their other second-half collapses. At some point, you've got to look at the head coach as the reason why the Giants can't keep it going in November and December.

Didn't the Giants have the toughest schedule of all in the second half of the season?

I remember a commenter early on speculating about what narrative would form around the "Giants second-half collapse" once their schedule got unbelievably tough. I didn't expect to see one of those narratives here!

The Giants' second-half collapses in DVOA are significant. This year, for example, they rank ninth in defensive DVOA through Week 9, and 31st in defensive DVOA for Weeks 10-15. So while schedule is a part of it, they are collapsing in the second half when it comes to opponent-adjusted performance as well.

...and that's what I get for not being an Insider.

Maybe I'll just quit making ignorant comments about articles I haven't read.

The Giants always seem to have major injuries. Maybe it's time to fire the training staff...

Also consider that aside from the Super Bowl year, the Giants have never won a post-season game under Coughlin.

So your argument is that other than the games they've won in the post season under Coughlin, they've never won a game in the post season under Coughlin?

I would assert playoff wins in one season out of 7 (with this year on life support), isn't very impressive. The Super Bowl took a lot of pressure off.
