Super Bowl XLI Rundown

Aaron Schatz doesn't like to make specific predictions, so it's no surprise that the stat-filled FO preview doesn't take sides. Mike Tanier isn't quite so indecisive, which means that Rundown is filled with jokes and then, finally, a pick: Colts.

I always just pick the opposite of Peter King

I keep reading about people calling the bears whiners for saying that they are the underdogs. With everyone picking the Colts to win, how are they not underdogs?

Note: this question has nothing to do with anything mike wrote about, I just happened to think about it after reading the column.

King lost me when he pulled out the "act like you've been there" line when a bunch of JAX players mocked the ballin' dance done by a bunch of Giants players who haven't been there. Only thing from SI I still read is Dr. Z (partly because Z extols the virtues of strong red wines and Yuengling lager instead of the girliest drinks available at Starbucks).

As always, treeemendously enjoyable. Way to work his Royal Shortness in there, too. Would a full Revolution reunion (esp. Wendy and Lisa) for the halftime show be too much to ask?

Eh, probably.

Any way to get Sheila E. back to play the cowbells?

The Redskins joke in the intro was so incredibly good. I love you, Mike Tanier.

Wasn't "Acceptable Rex" a Warren Zevon song?

2: It's not that they say they're underdogs. Every game has to have an underdog. It's that they turn it into "disrespect" Patriots style. Like it's so outragous that the media and fans are dissing them by saying their 0.0 rating QB might make them less likely to win the game. Like beating up on weak NFC competition might make their record a little suspicious. Nobody thinks the Bears have no chance, but there has to be a favorite in every game and, quite frankly, the road the Colts have taken to get here has been more impressive than squeaking by the Seahawks (?!?!) and pummeling the Saints.

Is Evil Rex and Good Rex morphing into Acceptable Rex like when Grey Hulk and Green Hulk merged to just become Hulk?

"So if the elevator tries to bring you down, punch a higher floor. Celebrate Peyton's coronation."

Well, if you want to crown him, then crown his ass! :)

Re: Billy Joel diss - Mike, I can't believe you consider yourself a resident of New Jersey and don't worship Billy Joel. I thought it was a state law or something.

Jags DE Bobby McCray invented the ballin' celebration, the Giants just stole it.

Honestly I doubt schatz will ever read this but his whole commentary on the superbowl is such a horrible conglomeration of outdated and unrelated statistics that it sickens even the stock market analyst in me. I try to make unprofitable stocks profitable sometimes, but to try so hard to bring up every single statistic that the giants hold that "could possibly be the worst statistic ever in superbowl history" on its own, irregardless of anything else any other team has done in the superbowl is just irresponsible reporting. This is a misinformation of facts. The manipulation of statistics; where simplicity is part of why i love football statistics; has turned into the stupid "lets take as many stats from 20 years ago and bring them together even though the game as changed" that baseball has relegated itself to. Not that I hate anyone from queens that loves stats... cuz they all do... but football is a very different sport.

In the end, I am a Giants fan, and I completely admit they are a very large underdog. I am currently in London(have convinced coworkers to say up late on a Sunday). I don't think the Giants will win... but as a professional statistician the article I saw angered me more than anything only because of the falsities that it empowered.
