Bill Simmons Podcast for Divisional Round

Time for another edition of the Bill Simmons podcast on ESPN.com, featuring football talk with all of Bill's friends and... me. I'm like an honorary Friend of Bill Simmons! This week's "mistake I didn't realize until later" is identifying the Green Bay nickel back as Patrick Dendy (last year's guy) instead of Jarrod Bush. Podcast is in the top right of the Sports Guy page (linked) and I think I'm second up this time, not first.

Simmons: "You just made my head hurt."

Goddammit, I wasn't going for the first comment with that particular cheap shot. Obligatory kudos to Simmons for being the only good thing on Page 2, and for bringing Aaron on. Great job all around.

Bill should stick with Aaron and Sal (and Johnny for baseball). Those other guys are meh.

Eli's QB rating actually goes up against the blitz, not that I'd expect Simba to do any heavy lifting. Of course he could see that on ESPN.com with about three clicks, but whatever.

It's also silly how Simmons always gives Vick the credit for that 2003 playoff win at Green Bay. That win was steered by defense and special teams; Vick was along for the ride. Box score link at name.

Aaron talks about the Cowboys struggling with New York's pass rush in the second meeting, but geesh, Romo went down once, and he was 20-for-28 with a 123.1 rating. Looks like the Cowboys line, one way or another, won that matchup (perhaps Romo made the line's play look better with some play-extending movement in the pocket, one of his best skills).

What is also completely forgotten is that Packers were in complete tatters by that game. GB had gotten manhandled the previous week 42-17(!) by the Jets with home field advantage on the line for the simple reason that the team had run out of healthy bodies. Guys who missed all or most of the Atlanta game include:

Darren Sharper
Gilbert Brown (who left after getting cut blocked on the first series)
Ahman Green (left in the 2nd quarter)
Terry Glenn
Donald Driver (who left in the second quarter with a concussion)

KGB was puking before and during the game with the flu.

Ahman Green shouldn't have even tried to play with his injuries. Same with KGB who had been sick for several days and had lost 15 lbs. And this from a guy who back then played at about 245.

Look, the Falcons played well. They made the plays. But the Packers were missing a lot of playmakers.

Badger, you're missing the story. VICK VICK VICK!

Seriously, you make a good point.

I'm almost embarrassed to admit I like listening to Simmons and his NE peeps, even as they have fuzzy memories at times (when they thought back to the Bledsoe era, they got a slew of dates and facts wrong, years, teams, stuff most Pats fans can spit out immediately. Vinatieri's 2-point rush came against Buffalo, the 'just give it to them' game. Bledsoe's 70-pass orgy was not in his rookie year. Etc, etc . . . )

It's amazing how well you can remember details of your own team's playoff games. That ATL-GB game was six years ago and badger writes about it like it was Tuesday.

Aaron, don't feel bad about the player mixup. Jarrett Bush was picked up by GB at the start of the 2006 regular season after he was waived by the Panthers. Patrick Dendy and Bush both played together in Green Bay in 2006. In the off-season that followed, Dendy was cut, and wound up being signed by the Panthers. It's easy to see how anyone could mix up the two players.

Ask Will Allen about the "Drew Pearson" game if you want to get completely FREAKED OUT. That game took place in the LAST CENTURY. When Minnesota played OUTSIDE. Before ESPN if you can believe such a time existed.

I think most fans go Rainman for the big games. Interestingly for me is that a game that sits with me to a play by play level is the GB-Pitt game to finish the 1995 season. The immortal "Thigpen Drop" game in Packer lore.

Awesome game. A-W-E-S-O-M-E.

I think my favorite part of this podcast is how SImmons could take completely unrelated topics and turn them into questions about the Patriots.

And by favorite, I mean made me want to throw my iPod at the wall.
