FO on Rotoworld: Week 6

Bye weeks killing your fantasy team? You and everybody else. Including Tim Gerheim, who chimes in with this week's FO stat-based start and sit recommendations.

FOX Blog Wrap-Up, October 7-13

So, I've been trying to figure out what to do about the Football Outsiders FOX blog, and alerting people to the content. We don't want to link every piece back to FO, because we want people to get used to checking it on their own, but we also don't want our dedicated readers to miss the stuff we're writing over there. So I'm going to try this, a weekly look at what we covered on the FOX blog on Friday afternoons, which can be a catch-all thread for discussion of these topics free from the standard "FO stats are dumb" FOX commenters.

Harrington Gets a Second Chance

The Detroit Lions are 1-14 since 2002 in games started by quarterbacks not named "Joey Harrington." Perhaps he wasn't the problem? My argument in favor of giving Harrington the benefit of the doubt in Miami.

Week 6 Rundown: Is This the Week?

As in, is this the week the Steelers finally turn it around? Or will they be stopped by the 2-2 Kansas City Chiefs, led by the second-highest rated passer in the league (seriously) and an improved defense? Also in the latest Rundown: the Eagles vs. Little Tuna, Baltimore's media overreaction, and the new (now old) Atlanta offense.

FO on BSMW: Rundown

But, what about Randall Cunningham and Steve Young?
Burned to toast?
Vaporized to milk shake?
Or... escaped to ESPN?!?

Until we know, we'll have to see whether running quarterbacks do, as Bill Simmons hypothesized three weeks ago, flame out quicker than slower ones. Like Shredder.

2006 Quick Reads: Week 5

The game between the Cowboys and Eagles ended up a lot closer than the personal competition between Donovan McNabb and Terrell Owens. T.O. had the lowest DPAR of any receiver this week, and Drew Bledsoe had the lowest DPAR of any quarterback. So, who gets the blame? Plus: Eli Manning and Alex Smith play well, and Vince Young needs to play more shotgun.

Manic Monday: The Value of Revenge

Two marquee games turned far more on the efforts of the "undercards" than the antagonists, especially the brilliance of one defensive coordinator. The hype story was revenge, but the real tale told was of incomprehensible noise when it came to that receiver from Dallas. The Chargers overcame last week's loss to send the Super Bowl champs into a deeper hole, and Albert Haynesworth may have a rival in the "Cheap Shot" department.

Remembering Those Who Paved the Way

I got a lot of e-mails and one phone call in response to my column on Al Davis this week. That phone call was from Dave Pear, a former Raiders lineman who disagreed with the kind words I had for Davis. My column this week stems from my conversation with Pear.

Week 5 Rundown: Oh No, T.O. Won't Go

Ah, the fetid, compost-like smell of overripe hype.

2006 Quick Reads: Week 4

Here's this week's look at the best and worst performances of the week by DPAR, delayed a day due to the Jewish holiday. That's right, DPAR -- this week we add in opponent adjustments for the first time. It was a big week for quarterbacks named Marc(k) and a bad week for quarterbacks recovering from ACL injuries. Also: Is Reggie Bush the NFL's worst running back when it comes to actual running? (By the way, DVOA ratings are also delayed due to the holiday, and Any Given Sunday is delayed because Ned had some travel problems this weekend.)
