Rob Gronkowski Suspended One Game

The NFL has suspended New England Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski for one game following his late hit to a prone, defenseless Tre'Davious White during Sunday's game against the Buffalo Bills. Gronkowski will miss next Monday night's game against the Miami Dolphins. He has appealed the suspension. Video of the hit is available here.

Injury Aftermath: Week 13

A very, very mild Week 13 sees only one major injury that we know of, but it hits a key starter on an AFC playoff contender.

Giants Fire HC McAdoo, GM Reese

The New York Giants cleaned house Monday morning, firing head coach Ben McAdoo and general manager Jerry Reese.

McAdoo led the Giants to a playoff spot in his first season as head coach last year, but yesterday's loss to the Raiders dropped this version of the Giants to 2-10. That alone would be one thing, but a season of clubhouse drama, performances with dismal apparent effort, and the mishandling of Eli Manning's benching proved too much.

Also: Jimmy Garoppolo's quietly impressive 49ers debut and the mystery of how a team can "win the draft" for two years yet still turn to a player who has been out of football for three years to be the focal point of their offense.

Giants Benching Eli Manning

Eli Manning has started 210 consecutive regular-season games, the second-longest streak by a quarterback in NFL history behind Brett Favre's 297. He will not start a 211th consecutive game, though. The Giants announced on Tuesday that Geno Smith will start at quarterback against the Oakland Raiders. They said they will use the next five games to evaluate Smith and Davis Webb, a third-round rookie out of California, though they did not say that Webb will play this week.

Raiders Fire DC Ken Norton

Well, it was nice for the Raiders to do this right after I sent out a bunch of tweets about how bad their defense is. Oakland is 32nd in defensive DVOA right now. If the season ended today, the Raiders would have the second-worst pass defense in DVOA history, one-tenth of a percent behind the 2015 Saints.

The Raiders are allowing a 72.3 percent completion rate. Joe Flacco has only four games this year with 200 passing yards, only three completing 70 percent of passes, and only three with no interceptions. There's only one game where he did all three things. It was against Oakland.
