150 Heck yeah! That's ultimately…

Heck yeah! That's ultimately why I decided to root for the Chiefs today. Glad to see him get it finally, it's been long overdue.

The Mike Holmgren (okay, I guess Bill Walsh) coaching tree is still going strong!

138 I'm flabbergasted. Nothing…

I'm flabbergasted. Nothing that occurred in the first 3.5 quarters of this game portended that turnaround.

152 We must have been watching…

We must have been watching different games.  Mahomes had an off game (non-SF forced, he was just missing guys), and that's what was stopping KC.  KC scoring on their drives seemed like the expected result if Mahomes stopped making errors, which he eventually did.  Meanwhile SF was moving the ball with long runs, which is often unsustainable in the NFL (which Shanahan seemed to recognize by adding more passes in H2).  Had they continued to do so, they would have won, but once KC got a stop, it was game on.

I'll be curious to see what GWC for KC was at it's lowest.  I'm going to guess still above 30%.

161 Before the big turnaround…

Before the big turnaround the 49ers had been stopped once by a pick and once by a botched end of half drive. Otherwise they had driven down the field and scored on every drive. I think the reversal of fortunes that occurred on that side of the ball was shocking. Somewhat less on the other side but still a surprise.

174 I was probably influenced by…

I was probably influenced by my expectations coming into the game.  I wasn't expecting SF to be able to sustain drives for a full game, so wasn't surprised when they finally started to struggle.

You may well be right that it was against the run of the game to that point, I just wasn't ever at the point, watching the game, that I thought SF was going to win.  The second KC INT made me think "if KC loses, that's likely to be the play that does it", but I still anticipated a KC win.  So KC getting the lead back was just reinforcement of my expectations.

189 That's KC's super-power. You…

That's KC's super-power. You can dominate them for 3.5 quarters, but all they need is 7 minutes of advantage and they can put up three scores.

Which is why I compare their offense to Sanders. 16-36 is great, but it tended to end with 20-110.

141 And... we're done here. I…

And... we're done here.

I can't complain about the play call on that 3rd down bomb by Garoppolo, because Sanders had a step on the defense, but I still question abandoning the run with 2 minutes and 3 timeouts. It's good to conserve your 3rd time in case of a sack, but they had plenty of time to go 50 yards in 2 minutes.

142 Can't believe the 49ers had…

Can't believe the 49ers had a 1st down at the KC49 and went 4 straight passes without a run

148 So I was wearing my Revis…

So I was wearing my Revis jersey, becoming more and more disgusted with this game. When the Hill reception on 2nd and 15 got overturned, I took the jersey off. Then Hill had the 40 yarder and everything else happened. I will be more careful what I wear in the future.

Obviously, the point is that comparing Sherman and Revis is unfair to the 2 Hall of Famers.

154 Hmm, I wonder what DVOA will…

Hmm, I wonder what DVOA will think of that game. Maybe that late TD and the interception on the next drive will make it close or even push KC over the top.

160 I can't get over 3rd and 4th…

I can't get over 3rd and 4th down and Kittle is lined up in the backfield blocking.

167 Shanahan & co. did not cover…

Shanahan & co. did not cover themselves in glory. The weird time management at the end of the first half, calling 4 straight passes on their last possession, going sideline on the play before the 2 min warning, not really getting Kittle, their best player, involved as a playmaker at all... lots of strategic and tactical errors.

173 Yes, Damien Williams might…

Yes, Damien Williams might have earned it by outrushing the SF RBs. But no single player really stood out on either side. Breeland, Chris Jones, Kelce all had major contributions. But Mahomes gets it by delivering first downs and TDs passing and running, despite the turnovers.

178 I think that's about right. …

I think that's about right.  Cracking the 100 yard mark gave Williams a shot at being recognized, but the come back came from the passing game, and Hill and Watkins split the yardage.

I might have gone with Breeland for the rare D-player MVP over Mahomes, personally.  EDIT: Ninja'd on the Breeland vote, but the more I think of it, the more I think he was the right choice.

181 I was thinking Williams…

I was thinking Williams might win it, but then that’s kind of like Iguadala winning NBA finals MVP. Mahomes made the running game work until Mahomes got going. Mahomes didn’t actually have a good game until the end, but their D was hardly dominant, so going with the boring choice was fine I think.

179 Funny, we were discussing…

Funny, we were discussing where Jimmy G ranked among QBs and basically came up with Cousins. They’re both excellent front runners. Can’t really blame him for the loss overall, but still, once they fell behind, I wasn’t confident.

171 Why do the tee shirts…

Why are the tee shirts printed with Super Bowl LIIV? That would be SB 64.

180 last play

The last play of this game was an incomplete pass by the winning team. I know that's probably happened before, but it's got to be pretty rare...

183 That was only the second…

In reply to by joebarnin

That was only the second pass in the last 10 seconds by the winning team.

193 Pass in the last 10 seconds

I'll bite--who was the other? Super Bowl V where the Colts beat Dallas at the end? I thought that Montana to Taylor was outside of 10 seconds.

182 Exciting game to watch…

Exciting game to watch. Could have gone either way, until it came down to putting the ball in Mahomes' hands or Garoppolo's. Then it became no contest. Andy Reid deserved to win this one.

185 I thought the big difference…

I thought the big difference in the 4th quarter (or really, the last ten minutes) vs. the rest of the game was that the Niners stopped getting as much pressure on Mahomes. He had an extra fraction of a second each play, and that seemed to make a huge difference in his ability to make good reads and accurate throws down the field.

187 On the Sammie Watkins…

On the Sammie Watkins reception, I was surprised how little pressure the 49ers had. Watkins had abused Richard a Sherman anyway, but there was no one close to Mahomes on that play.

I think the 49ers started to drop a lot more into coverage after it worked on Mahomes’ first interception. The lack of pressure on Mahomes in the second half of the fourth quarter really seemed to be the difference.
