The data image

NFL stats are a key to understanding football through the lens of advanced analytics. Football Outsiders' NFL stats provide insights to items ranging from the ubiquitous and proprietary DVOA (Defense-Adjusted Value Over Average) to player performance metrics like DYAR (Defense-Adjusted Yards Above Replacement) and more granular items like defense versus receivers, offensive line play, amongst others. The top performers in each of our NFL stats are below and you can see all of the data points for each team with an FO+ membership.

DVOA

OVERALL TEAM

What is DVOA? DVOA (Defense-adjusted Value Over Average) takes every single play during the season and compares success to a league-average baseline based on situation and opponent. DVOA measures not just yardage, but yardage towards a first down: Five yards on third-and-4 are worth more than five yards on first-and-10 and much more than five yards on third-and-12. Learn More >>

SPECIAL TEAMS

What is Special Teams DVOA? This metric estimates how many points, compared to league average, each team receives from the five elements of special teams: field goals, extra points, kickoffs, kick returns, punts, and punt returns. The total is then converted into a DVOA percentage so that it can be added in to offense and defense to create total team DVOA. Learn More >>

Situation-Neutral Pace

What is Situation-Neutral Pace? Computed from NFL drive charts with the intent to describe pace as dictated by each team's game plan or style of play, not pace that is situation-induced. It's a useful metric to assess the number of plays an offense runs. This gives us the ability see which teams will see more potential opportunites on offense which could lead to more touches, receptions and passing opportunites for offensive players. Teams are listed with the number of play clock seconds between plays. Learn More >>
