In the preseason, we were concerned that the 49ers would not be able to stay healthy enough to sustain a serious playoff run this year, and unfortunately for San Francisco, they started off the year on the wrong foot. Against the Lions, the 49ers lost starting running back Raheem Mostert and starting cornerback Jason Verrett to season-ending injuries, and linebacker Dre Greenlaw will also miss 6-8 weeks with a groin injury. It definitely took away some of the shine from a Week 1 contest in which they thoroughly dominated Detroit for three quarters, though they had to fend off a furious comeback attempt to hang onto the win late. First-rounder Trey Lance got some early action, primarily in the red zone and in short yardage situations, and it will be interesting to see how long Jimmy Garoppolo can hold him off. -- Carl Yedor
