It's easy to explain why the 49ers followed their 2019 Super Bowl berth by missing the playoffs in 2020: almost everyone got hurt. But San Francisco is often among the league leaders in injuries, so there's no guarantee they'll be healthy enough for a deep playoff run this fall. If they can buck that trend, the 49ers have the front-line talent to compete with most any team in the league. They're in an odd position as a team that looks ready to win now while also preparing for the future. Trey Lance, the third overall pick in the draft, will likely redshirt this season...assuming, of course, Jimmy Garoppolo survives for 16 games, something he has done just once in his career.  – Vince Verhei
